Suzuka Weekend Summary: Mercedes Total Domination

The 2026 F1 Japanese Grand Prix weekend at Suzuka has been defined by one word — Mercedes. The Silver Arrows locked out the top two in all four sessions, from FP1 through qualifying, establishing complete authority over the field.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen was eliminated in Q2, and Lando Norris battled reliability gremlins across multiple sessions. Here’s the full breakdown from FP1 to qualifying.

Photo by Jonathan Borba / Pexels

FP1: Russell Leads, Mercedes Fires the Opening Salvo

George Russell topped the opening session with a 1:31.666, edging teammate Kimi Antonelli by just 0.026 seconds (1:31.692). The top six was a clean split between the big three: Mercedes 1-2, McLaren 3-4 (Norris, Piastri), Ferrari 5-6 (Leclerc, Hamilton).

Verstappen was down in 7th at +0.791s — the first hint of Red Bull’s struggles. An incident between Albon and Perez at the Casio Triangle triggered an FIA investigation, while Albon had earlier bounced through the gravel at Degner 2 and hit the tire barriers.

FP2: Piastri Strikes Back for McLaren

McLaren hit back in the second session. Oscar Piastri posted 1:30.133 on soft tires to go fastest, with Antonelli just 0.092s behind and Russell in third.

Verstappen dropped to 10th at +1.376s — the gap widening from FP1’s +0.791s. An ominous trend was forming.

The headline concern was Norris’s hydraulics failure. He sat in the garage for the first 23 minutes, losing crucial long-run data. He recovered to post the 4th fastest time, but the damage to his race preparation was done.

Franco Colapinto was summoned to the stewards for impeding Verstappen on the back straight. Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) completed zero laps due to technical issues.

AI generated image

FP3: Antonelli Untouchable — Nearly 1 Second Clear of the Rest

Antonelli put down a 1:29.362 in the final practice session. Russell followed at +0.254s. But the real shock was the chasm to third place:

Leclerc (Ferrari): +0.867s

Piastri (McLaren): +1.002s

Hamilton (Ferrari): +1.021s

Norris (McLaren): +1.238s

Mercedes was nearly a full second clear of everyone else. If this gap held into qualifying, pole was going to be an intra-team affair.

Norris was hit with yet another issue — a battery problem discovered before the session started. McLaren completed emergency repairs with just 22 minutes remaining. Two reliability failures in consecutive sessions left the defending champion severely compromised heading into qualifying.

Verstappen was 8th (+1.548s). The downward trend from FP1 (+0.791s) to FP2 (+1.376s) to FP3 (+1.548s) was accelerating.

Qualifying Results: Antonelli Takes Pole, Mercedes 1-2 Confirmed

Antonelli sealed pole with a stunning 1:28.778 — the fastest lap of the entire weekend. Russell completed the fourth consecutive Mercedes 1-2 at +0.298s.

What Happened to Verstappen? The Q2 Shock Explained

The weekend’s biggest upset: championship leader Max Verstappen was eliminated in Q2, assigned P11 on the grid.

His radio message to the team was stark:

“Undriveable. The car is jumping. Something is fundamentally wrong.”

The progression across sessions told a damning story:

Teammate Isack Hadjar managed only P8 in Q3 (+1.200s), confirming this isn’t a driver issue — the RB21 package simply doesn’t work at Suzuka’s high-speed corners.

Starting P11 at a circuit notoriously difficult for overtaking, Verstappen faces a real points damage limitation exercise.

AI generated image

Norris Reliability Woes: How Much Will It Cost?

McLaren has the pace — Piastri’s FP2 best and qualifying P3 proved that. But the defending champion’s weekend has been a nightmare of mechanical failures:

FP2: Hydraulics system failure — 23 minutes lost

FP3: Battery issue — most of session lost, only 22 minutes of running

Qualifying: Made Q3 on incomplete preparation, P5 (+0.631s)

Two consecutive sessions of significant lost running means Norris enters the race without proper tire degradation data, fuel load balance information, or a fully optimized setup. The strategic implications could be significant.

Piastri, by contrast, had a clean weekend and outperformed Norris in every session. The intra-team dynamic is shifting.

Midfield Movers: Gasly and Bortoleto Impress

Beyond the big three, several drivers delivered standout performances.

Pierre Gasly (Alpine) qualified P7 at +0.913s — just 0.124s behind Hamilton. Alpine’s upgrade package appears to be working.

Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi) in P9 was another highlight, showing steady progress for the Audi F1 project. Notably stronger than teammate Nico Hulkenberg, who was eliminated in Q2.

Rookie Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) made Q3 in P10 — an impressive first Suzuka qualifying for the youngest driver on the grid.

Race Day Preview: Five Things to Watch

Mercedes race pace reality: Qualifying dominance doesn’t always translate. Tire management and fuel-load balance could narrow or widen the gap.

Verstappen from P11: Suzuka’s DRS zones help, but the high-speed corners make overtaking fundamentally difficult. Undercut/overcut strategy may be his best weapon.

Piastri vs Norris: Starting P3 vs P5. If Piastri stays ahead in the race, team order discussions become inevitable.

Ferrari’s constructors’ battle: Leclerc P4, Hamilton P6. Can they split the McLarens and claw back constructors’ points?

Weather wildcard: Suzuka’s infamous weather variability could reshuffle the entire grid. Rain would be a lifeline for Verstappen.

This one’s a bit late — okay, really late. The race happened a week ago. But I couldn’t skip writing about this one. Kimi Antonelli’s maiden F1 victory and Lewis Hamilton’s first podium for Ferrari — two historic moments in a single race deserve to be documented, even if it takes a little longer.

We covered the Sprint Qualifying results in the previous post. This post covers both the Sprint race and the main race results.

Race result: How did Antonelli become the second youngest F1 winner?

The winner of the 2026 F1 Chinese Grand Prix was Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli. He crossed the line with a race time of 1:33:15.607, finishing 5.515 seconds clear of teammate George Russell.

Antonelli is 19 years and 202 days old, making him the second youngest Grand Prix winner in F1 history — only behind Max Verstappen (18 years, 228 days at the 2016 Spanish GP). This is a remarkable turnaround from the Sprint, where he finished P5 after receiving a 10-second penalty for a first-lap collision with Hadjar.

In the main race, Antonelli never lost the lead. After his sole pit stop under the Safety Car period early in proceedings, he maintained his position at the front. He also set the fastest lap of the race (1:35.275 on Lap 52), delivering a near-perfect Grand Slam performance.

Liauzh / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 4.0)

How did Hamilton secure his first Ferrari podium?

Third place went to Lewis Hamilton — his first Grand Prix podium since joining Ferrari. He finished 25.267 seconds behind Antonelli, but the real highlight was his intense battle with teammate Charles Leclerc (P4, +28.894s).

After the race, Hamilton said it was “the best racing of my entire F1 career.” For a 40-year-old seven-time World Champion to say that after his first podium with a new team tells you everything about the quality of this race. The gap between Hamilton and Leclerc was just 3.6 seconds — a thriller right to the end.

DNF: Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin)
DNS: Lando Norris (McLaren), Oscar Piastri (McLaren), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), Alexander Albon (Williams)
Fastest Lap: Kimi Antonelli — 1:35.275 (Lap 52)

Team-by-team analysis: Key takeaways from Shanghai

Mercedes: The perfect weekend

Sprint win for Russell, race win for Antonelli. Both drivers taking turns at the top is an ideal situation for the team. Following their dominance in Melbourne, Mercedes has confirmed they have the strongest package under the 2026 regulations. Antonelli’s mental resilience — bouncing back from a Sprint penalty to deliver a flawless race — is particularly impressive for a 19-year-old.

Ferrari: Hamilton-Leclerc battle is an asset

Consistent P3-P4 finishes keep Ferrari in the championship fight, but the gap to Mercedes is clear. The positive sign is that both drivers are performing at a competitive level. Hamilton’s experience and Leclerc’s raw speed could create powerful synergy as the team develops their car through the season.

Red Bull: Crisis deepens

Steffen Prößdorf / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Verstappen retired from the race, facing the prospect of back-to-back pointless weekends. He only managed P9 in the Sprint, and teammate Hadjar’s P8 was the best Red Bull could do in the race. The fall from 2024’s dominance shows just how much the 2026 regulations have reshuffled the order. Without fundamental fixes to their drivetrain issues, Red Bull could lose the entire first half of the season.

McLaren: Shanghai nightmare

After a decent Sprint showing (Norris P4, Piastri P6), the main race was a disaster — both drivers DNS due to car issues. Four cars in total failed to start (Norris, Piastri, Bortoleto, Albon), making this an exceptional race. McLaren needs to sort their reliability urgently.

Haas & Alpine: Midfield standouts

Oliver Bearman (Haas, P5) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine, P6) delivered impressive results. Bearman in particular has been consistently strong across Sprint and race, establishing himself as a Rookie of the Year contender.

Sprint race results — 2026 Chinese GP

Saturday’s Sprint saw George Russell take a lights-to-flag victory, finishing just 0.674 seconds ahead of Leclerc, with Hamilton completing the podium.

Russell leads by 4 points, with Antonelli closing the gap after his victory. Leclerc and Hamilton are separated by just 1 point in the fight for P3. Mercedes holds a commanding lead in the constructors’ championship.

What to expect at the Japanese Grand Prix (Suzuka)?

The next race is the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka Circuit, March 26-29 — Round 3 of the 2026 season and the final leg of the Asian triple-header.

Suzuka is a 5.807km circuit raced over 53 laps, and it’s widely regarded as one of the most technically demanding tracks on the calendar. The high-speed S-curves and the legendary 130R corner test both aerodynamic performance and driver courage in equal measure.

Key storylines to watch:

Can anyone stop Mercedes? — After back-to-back 1-2 finishes, will they make it three in a row at Suzuka?

Red Bull’s fightback — Verstappen won at Suzuka three years in a row (2022-2024). Can he channel those memories into a comeback after fixing their drivetrain issues?

McLaren reliability — Can they recover from the China DNS nightmare?

Antonelli’s momentum — Will the maiden winner carry his confidence into a winning streak, or will the pressure of expectations catch up?

Hamilton vs Leclerc — How will the intra-team Ferrari battle play out through Suzuka’s high-speed sections?

Japanese GP schedule:

FP1: Friday, March 27 — 11:30 local time

FP2: Friday, March 27 — 15:00

FP3: Saturday, March 28 — 11:30

Qualifying: Saturday, March 28 — 15:00

Race: Sunday, March 29 — 14:00 JST

Suzuka uses the traditional weekend format (no Sprint), giving teams three practice sessions to fine-tune their setups. Whether anyone can challenge Mercedes’ dominance remains the biggest question heading into Round 3.

I’ll try to get the next race report up on time. Probably.

Mercedes Unstoppable in Shanghai

Fresh off a dominant season opener in Melbourne, Mercedes carried their momentum to Shanghai with devastating effect. George Russell topped every single session from FP1 through Sprint Qualifying, proving once again that the 2026 regulations have been cracked wide open by the Silver Arrows.

FP1 Results: Mercedes 1-2, Gap Already Clear

In Friday’s sole practice session, Russell set the pace with a 1:32.741, with teammate Kimi Antonelli just 0.12s behind in P2. McLaren’s Norris (+0.555s) and Piastri (+0.731s) took P3-4, while Ferrari’s Leclerc (+0.858s) and Hamilton (+1.388s) could only manage P5-6.

The real shock was Red Bull. Max Verstappen languished in P8 (+1.8s), signaling trouble from the very first session. Haas’s Oliver Bearman outqualified both Red Bulls from P7.

Sprint Qualifying: Full Results

Russell clinched his first career Sprint pole with a 1:31.520 in SQ3. Antonelli completed the Mercedes front-row lockout, 0.289s adrift.

Key Takeaways

1. Mercedes: A New Era of Dominance

Mercedes have built a clearly superior machine under the 2026 regulations. Russell’s pole was described as “profoundly routine” — topping every session at two consecutive circuits isn’t track-specific advantage, it’s fundamental package superiority. The 0.289s gap to Antonelli only reinforces the team’s overall pace.

2. McLaren’s Melbourne Redemption

After being “embarrassed by Ferrari” in Australia, McLaren bounced back dramatically in Shanghai. Norris and Piastri finished within a tenth of each other in P3-5, showcasing impressive team consistency. The gap to Mercedes (~0.6s) remains significant, but they’ve reclaimed “best of the rest” status.

3. Ferrari’s Upside-Down Wing Saga

The weekend’s biggest technical talking point was Ferrari’s radical “upside-down” rear wing. First spotted during pre-season testing, this innovative design appeared to rotate roughly 225 degrees compared to a conventional wing, designed specifically for Shanghai’s long straights.

The FIA cleared the design as legal, but after Friday practice, Ferrari shelved it for the rest of the weekend. Hamilton called the debut “a little bit premature” on team radio while joking that it should be nicknamed the “flip-flop wing.”

Leclerc, who could only manage P6, reportedly raged on team radio about strategy issues. His growing gap to Hamilton (P4) added to Ferrari’s internal tensions.

4. Red Bull’s Downward Spiral

The team that dominated through 2024 is struggling badly under the new regulations. Verstappen reported drivetrain problems including poor gear shifts and excessive rear wheel power delivery, nearly spinning at the Turn 16 exit. P8 is nothing short of a nightmare by his standards.

Rookie teammate Isack Hadjar fared even worse in P10, posting slower times in SQ3 than SQ2 — a sign the entire team is fighting the car.

5. Alpine’s Rise & Haas Surprise

Gasly claimed P7 as “best of the rest,” with Alpine benefiting from Shanghai’s medium/low-speed layout after struggling at Melbourne’s high-speed circuit. Bearman (P9) splitting both Red Bulls was an impressive showing for Haas.

Technical Change: Power Unit Recharge Limit Raised

The FIA increased the power unit energy recharge limit starting from the Chinese GP, responding to energy management issues some teams faced in Australia. This allows drivers to generate more electrical energy, potentially reshaping strategies for both the Sprint and main race.

Weekend Schedule

Sprint Race: March 14 (Sat) — 19 laps

Qualifying: March 14 (Sat)

Race: March 15 (Sun) — 56 laps

Can Russell convert his Sprint pole into victory? Will Verstappen’s Red Bull find any answers? Is Ferrari’s upside-down wing a glimpse of the future or a dead end? Shanghai’s weekend is far from over!

Fierce Competition in Q2 and Q1

Drivers who failed to advance to Q3 also gave their all until the very end. Notably, Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi) made it to Q3 but did not set a time, and many drivers like Nico Hülkenberg (Audi) and Oliver Bearman (Haas – Ferrari) narrowly missed out on Q3.

The most striking event was Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing)’s elimination in Q1. He failed to meet the 107% rule, leading to an unexpected start from the 20th grid position. Additionally, Carlos Sainz Jr. (Atlassian Williams – Mercedes) and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin Aramco – Honda) were also excluded from the race due to not meeting the 107% rule. These early season surprises indicate that the 2026 F1 season promises to be even more unpredictable and exciting.

Following Mercedes, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc secured 3rd place, stepping onto the podium. His veteran teammate, Lewis Hamilton, also finished 4th, showing that Ferrari’s strength is not to be underestimated.

McLaren’s Lando Norris consistently performed, finishing 5th. The most astonishing performance came from Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen. Despite starting from a disadvantageous 20th position in qualifying, he demonstrated incredible driving skills and excellent race management to recover his position, ultimately finishing 6th. Although he didn’t make it to the podium, his sheer power once again proved to be a formidable threat. It was an epic comeback that kept F1 fans on the edge of their seats.
